Labor Law Compliance Seminar

New York State Labor Department sends inspectors to enforce laws
Retail Council to host teleconference to advise members on employment regulations

Just as the 2007 holiday season was reaching its crescendo in late December, New York State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced a major enforcement initiative of the state’s labor laws in various industries, including retail. As part of the new enforcement effort, the department is partnering with labor advocates, community groups and unions to gather information necessary to conduct wage and hour investigations. The stepped up inspections are part of the state’s emphasis on increased labor law enforcement for low wage workers.

Retail Council to host teleconference on labor law compliance

To help member businesses comply with state labor laws, the Retail Council will host a free teleconference on Wednesday, April 23 at 8:30 a.m. featuring our labor standards consultants at Labor & Monitoring Consultants (LMC). Dick Polsinello, LMC president, and attorney Dorianne Beyer, will lead a 30-minute seminar on how to prepare your business for a Labor Department investigation. As part of the agenda, Mr. Polsinello and Ms. Beyer will briefly touch on wage/hour and recordkeeping laws – problem areas most frequently cited by Labor Department investigators in recent enforcement actions.

In addition to the expert presentation, Retail Council members will have the opportunity to ask the LMC representatives questions and schedule private, confidential 20 minute consultations (these consultations may be scheduled for a different date/time).

To participate in this teleseminar, simply return the registration form via fax or mail no later than Friday, April 18. You may also call the Retail Council to register at (800) 442-3589. Prior to the seminar, you will be provided with the telephone number and access code to participate in the event. You will be able to take part in the seminar from any location as long as you have access to a landline or cell phone.

You must be a member of the Retail Council of New York State to participate in this event. If you have questions about the teleconference, call Rebecca Flach, the Council’s director of public affairs, at (800) 442-3589.
