Albany, NY (WBEN) – Santa and his elves received a solid grade of “C+” from New York merchants this year.  The Retail Council of New York State says after a big opening weekend, the final two weeks leading up to Christmas didn’t amount to as high as hoped for sales.  More than half of those surveyed said sales weren’t as strong as hoped for; only 35% said sales were better this year.  In the week after Christmas, about 75% said sales were better than a year ago; indicating gift card/gift certificate sales were offsetting the “Blue Christmas” for many.
