James Sherin manages the daily operation of the Retail Council, including its government relations, member services programs and business affairs. He first joined the Council in 1984, long serving as the Director of Government Relations, and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 1990. In 1997, he was appointed to the Council's Executive Committee and elected to serve as one of three Retail Council Vice Chairmen. He was named Chief Operating Officer in 2000 and became Chief Executive Officer in 2003.
Mr. Sherin is also Chairman of the Council's Workers' Compensation Safety Group Executive Committee. In addition, he serves as Chairman of the Board and President of Retail Council Services Corp., the wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary of the Retail Council of New York State.
Prior to joining the Retail Council, Mr. Sherin was an editor and legislative writer for the New York State Assembly. He also served as Director of Communications for the New York State Association of Realtors.
Mr. Sherin has served on the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Taxpayer Advisory Council and the state’s Quality Communities Task Force Advisory Committee. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Renaissance Life and Health Insurance Company of New York, and is past Chairman of the Board of the national Council of State Retail Associations (CSRA).
Mr. Sherin holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Villanova University.
